Seth Thomas Design Changes Over the Production Period   1924 to 1954

Today a ST # 124E model came in for me to look at. I unpacked it and carefully set it on the benchtop. The first thing I saw is that it did not set flat on the bottom. I thought they all did. I looked at several other ST#124’s in the shop and all set flat on the base. What is different about this one? I noticed right off that this had riveted mainspring boxes so my theory that someone changed the time MS box, went out the window. I let down all 3 mainsprings and removed the lower MS plate. What I saw brought more questions, as to was the time gear 1st wheel the same size as all others I had worked on? The answer is NO. Does this change the speed of the second wheel and does it make any difference? Are there the same number of gear teeth on the #2 wheel?

I went through the other ST#124’s I have in storage and found a #124E with riveted boxes with the larger time box. I do not know why this change was made, but might guess it was near the end of US production of the #124, before going to the German movements, and maybe using up excess parts.

My suggestion to repair people is to measure the time box outside diameter as well as the 1st wheel diameter and if you find one to buy be sure to check the size. I do believe it still takes a #182 MS even in the larger box.

Today I finally  made the decision to purchase a Sherline lathe and mill attachment. I ordered the 8 inch lathe in a metric setup. This decision was made after I got a quote for
having a new shaft for the chime shutoff lever at $100 each. I am new to machine tools
but have worked in the printing industry all my life and done a bit of metal work from time
to time. I expect to spend a little time on a learning curve. Thanks to the Sherline website
with the videos and youtube. I will post pictures when I get it set up.

I have made my first chime shutoff lever. I would say it is not perfect, but works as
it should. Here is a picture of the mill setup in my garage.

Will be learning more and practice in the future.
